What does the dictionary contain?
In addition to the keyword itself, the dictionary contains information about pronunciation, word conjugation, word class and translation. Most often there are also grammar comments, word explanations, style comments, factual information, grammatical constructions and language examples.
Keyword
The look-up form normally consists of a single word but can also be a longer expression, especially in compound verbs (eg enjoy) and community words (eg general legal aid). Keywords consisting of compounds are separated by vertical lines. This marking is primarily for abbreviating the word's inflection and should not be seen as a fully completed division into parts of composition. The keywords can be followed by an alternative form which usually has the same pronunciation but different spelling, e.g. shawl or scarf. Note that pronunciation and inflection apply to the keyword rather than the alternative form.
Pronunciation
Lexin was originally developed to be used in immigrant education, i.e. of people who will learn Swedish. This means that pronunciation information is only available for Swedish words.
Length
A long sound is denoted with a colon immediately after the long sound, e.g. skull [²sk'al:a] and scale [²sk'a:la]
Quality
As for the vowels, the colon will also denote quality, e.g. mat [ma:t] and mat [mat:]
Word
accent Only grave accent is used. It is marked with a superscript two in front of the word (see the examples under Length above). Grave accent is found in e.g. bùren (to carry) while acute accent is found in búren (to cage).
Print
Head stress is marked by an apostrophe before the vowel in the stressed syllable, e.g. ABF [a:be:'ef] and ide [²'i:de]. Monosyllabic words do not receive such stress marking except in expressions with verb+particle and reflexive verbs that are written together, e.g. looks at [tit:arp'å:] and gives himself [j'ersej]. Additional pressure in assemblies can be read from the length marking. The last extended sound is accented, e.g. outvote [²'u:tsla:gsrös:t].
The consonants
No special symbols are used for [tj], [sj] and [ng], e.g. twenty [²tj'u:ge] and [²sj'ung:a]. The supradental found in some dialects is marked with an underscore below the two segments, e.g. table [bo:r_d], children [ba:r_n], fast [for_t:] and thirst [tör_s:t].
The vowels
The different vowel sounds are shown in the examples:
[a:] - sa [sa:], hall [sa:l]
[a] - hall [ha:l], said [sak:t], ATM [bangkom'a:t]
[e:] - be [ be:], know [ve:t]
[e] - pass [best'å:], know [vet:], fall [error:]
[i:] - bi [bi:], strain [si:l]
[i] - herring [sil:], idÈ [id'e:]
[o:] - sun [so:l], ro [ro:]
[o] - rot [rot:], cheese [os:t] , motive [mot'i:v]
[u:] - bu [bu:], louse [lu:s]
[u] - bus [bus:], mustache [must'a:sj]
[y:] - village [by:], awl [sy:l]
[y] - synonym [synonym], awl [syl:]
[å:] - go [go:], goose [gå:s]
[å] - boy [²g' ås:e], gone [gåt:], ombudsman [²'åm:bu:dsman:]
[ä:] - fä [fä:], seal [sä:l], bear [bä:r]
[ä] - mare [mär:], lord [²h'är:e]
[ö:] - snow [snö:], sweet [sö:t], lace [snö:r]
[ö] - lice [loz:], first [för_s:t], distribute [för_d'e:la]
Diphthongs
Diphthongs are marked with an underscore between the two vowel signs, e.g. automat [a_otom'a:t]
Inflection The inflectional forms
of inflected words are printed in full. An exception is such compositions where the joints are separated by a plumb line - in such cases only the bending of the trailing joint is reproduced, e.g. grace|time - the time. Words within normally inflected word classes that for some reason lack inflection are marked with uninflected.
